Two years of good results in sustainable urban development

The Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) proudly announces the successful completion of a two-year cooperation with the City of Boston & the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) as part of the European Union-funded International Urban and Regional Cooperation (IURC) program. Through this partnership, AMB has engaged in invaluable knowledge exchange on key urban development topics, contributing to the metropolis’ ongoing efforts to advance its sustainability goals.

From 2021 to 2023, AMB actively worked with Boston & NVRC on energy efficiency in buildings, public spaces, affordable housing models, and sustainable urban mobility & transport. The cooperation facilitated a range of activities, including a study visit to Boston & Northern Virginia and participation in numerous technical calls aimed at sharing best practices and practical insights for implementation.

AMB’s involvement in IURC also involved engaging with over fifty metropolis from Europe and North America in virtual and in-person activities organized by the program. The exchange of experiences with its partner city and others has directly influenced ongoing projects and plans in AMB, shaping future initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area. The results from AMB’s participation in IURC emphasize the importance of international partnerships in addressing urban challenges and driving sustainable urban development.

As of 2024, AMB will continue its participation in the IURC North America program, now as part of the thematic networks. By sharing experiences with other metropolis and staying connected to global urban innovation efforts, AMB aims to remain at the forefront of implementing best practices and innovative ideas in its projects and policies.

The European Union's IURC North America program partners European metropolis with Canadian and USA metropolis to facilitate knowledge exchange through online tools and face-to-face support such as study visits, participation in thematic and networking events, and capacity building. The program is financed under the EU Partnership Instrument and benefits from the strategic support of the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy of the European Commission.
